On January 10, 2016, FIBER & De Brakke Grond present Coded Matter(s) #11: Cinematic Specimens; a Sunday matinee full of exciting multi-sensory audiovisual performances. In the first Coded Matter(s) edition of the new year we will explore how artists and musicians use self-built systems and generative processes to produce sound and visuals.

We have invited four artists using complex (software) systems enabling them to generate a whole spectacle of organic structures, granular spaces and abstract textures. These systems often work autonomously and are based on mathematical- and biological principles. By keeping a balance between order and chaos the makers employ these dynamic processes in order to fuse sound and visuals into a unified experience for the audience.

Joris Strijbos
[NL] // Audiovisual performance
Joris Strijbos is a Rotterdam-based artist whose work focuses on the synaesthetic relation and interaction between moving image and sound. In his kinetic audiovisual installations and performances he combines artificial, electronic and digital media with models and algorithms based on biological systems. For Coded Matter(s) #11 Strijbos combined parts of previous and upcoming work in a generative and multi-sensorial live cinema composition where machines, computer programs and the performer interact with each other.

Doron Sadja
& Nenad Popov [US / RS] // Audiovisual performance
For ‘Cinematic Specimens’ audiovisual artists Nenad Popov and Doron Sadja come together for a special collaborative performance called “Flicker & Glitter”. Using custom built software instruments and controllers, the duo investigates sensory perception through sound and image. Popov’s vivid black and white imagery explores the simple interaction of pixels repeated thousands of times, allowing Escheresque tilings to emerge, dancing on the fringe between dimensions. Similarly, Sadja’s electronic sounds play with the extreme layering and spatialization of samples, resulting in rich, post-human, hyper-emotive sonic architectures.

Dutch premiere! This performance was first presented at SPEKTRUM (Berlin).

Yves De Mey
[BE] // Audiovisual performance
"Drawn With Shadow Pens" is the name of the new album and audiovisual performance which Antwerp based synthesist and sound-sculptor Yves De Mey will present at Coded Matter(s) #11. The album will be released on Spectrum Spools early 2016. With previous outings on a number of renowned labels such as Modal Analysis, Sandwell District, Semantica, Opal Tapes and his own Archives Intérieures imprint (with Sendai partner Peter Van Hoesen), "Drawn With Shadow Pens" is De Mey’s attempt at striving to reach a new apex in modern electronic synthesis; an album that will sound futuristic even in the future. Visuals are specially designed for De Mey's performance at Coded Matter(s) by Malo Lacroix [FR].

Dutch premiere! The audio performance was first presented at UNSOUND (Krakow).

Coded Matter(s) is supported by the Creative Industries Fund NL and Mondriaan Fund NL
