Linked to the theme Fragile Forces, the Amsterdam-based arts organisation FIBER presents two interconnected exhibitions under one roof at de Brakke Grond: Fragile Resonances and Fragile Terrains. The exhibitions form part of the annual FIBER Festival.
The separate sections function as two chapters, each inviting us in its own way to reflect on the concept of ‘fragility’ as a strength, rather than a weakness. One through sound art and ways of listening, the other through the vibrancy of matter.
Participating artists: Aldo Brinkhoff, Anaïs Lossouarn, Robin Koek & Jean-Emmanuel Rosnet, Sunjoo Lee | AYO, Brahim Tall, Franziska Windisch, Mariska de Groot, Mike Rijnierse & Rob Bothof
The concept of fragility carries an interesting tension within it: it is something that can easily be damaged, crack, or break into pieces. It is a state of tension that, once broken, may be irreversible. It urges us to handle something with care, in the awareness that when something is damaged, it is difficult to restore or may never return. At the same time, it can be used as a synonym for something that possesses material, cultural, and ecological beauty and vitality, yet cannot effectively protect itself against brute force.
At a time when everything is being damaged by hard power through climate impact and wars, the exhibition explores fragility and vulnerability as micro-forces from which we can draw hope. The two exhibitions invite us to slow down, to listen attentively to vulnerable sounds and minimal shifts in matter. The works emphasize how seemingly fragile processes and entities can together have a considerable impact, and how vulnerability can function as a genuinely connective force.
*The artwork De glace et d'eau by Robin Koek & Jean-Emmanuel Rosnet can only be viewed from 28 to 31 May, subject to a time-slot ticket.
